About Plotted Creatives
A Double Murder Mystery Gaming Experience
Who am I?
I am the creator of Plotted Creatives. I wrote and designed my first game, Death & the Rosa Theatre. Yes, I use AI for photos and some images because like I said, it’s just me. 🙂 But I did everything else. I created my website from scratch, designed my logo, and did everything else you see.
My real full-time job duties include SEO, content strategy, digital marketing, and all of the unseen but important tasks that come with those areas.
But I’m also a mom and stepmom (I exclude the “step” in my head in that reference. My kids are my kids, regardless if I was there from their beginning), a wife, team player for kid sports (admin, support person, cheerleader, unofficial video-er), and a caretaker for my 93-year-old father-in-law. Free time is not abundant (is it for anyone?), but occasionally fellow moms come together to play a murder mystery tabletop game. We sift through evidence, rule out suspects, and come to a consensus on who the murderer is.
But at the end of each game, I was left wanting more—more story, more character development, more game.
What I wanted was to feel like I finished a good mystery book, tv show, or movie. You know what I mean, where the characters and the story stay with you. Where character relationships and motivations seem real. I wanted to be emotionally invested in their outcomes.
I needed a more intertwined story.
I only saw two types of games:
- those you act out (not for me)
- single murder tabletop games
But I didn’t see double murder mysteries.
How did Plotted Creatives happen?
Turned out, I lost my job and thought, why not launch a murder mystery game company? The trick was to make them different from all the other games. I chose the more impossible path of creating a double murder mystery game where the cold case and the fresh murder case were connected, and you couldn’t solve one without the other. You know, why not make something hard even harder…
Sure, I hadn’t written fiction in years. I didn’t have any startup money, or know how to start a business. But time, I (barely) had. So, I began to circle through story ideas. The most productive ones came from dog walks and sitting in the car pickup line at my daughter’s school.
The story and characters changed a billion times as I walked, and I’m sure I forgot details when I did. But what ended up happening is I was inspired again. I sat down at the computer and just started to write interviews from main characters. And as that flowed, I added other characters and story twists. I tweaked. And tweaked more. (Dog walking is also how my second game is getting created! It’s coming soon, but seriously, these games are a beast to create.)
But I needed a company name. Everything I thought of that had a literary undertone was literally taken already. But the zinger came while I was waiting to pick my daughter up from school.
The games are creative. Their storylines are carefully plotted, as are the murders. The name became: Plotted Creatives. 🙂
